so after i made a mess of my last post (i blame the wine) im going to go into detail about expanding and improving a party.
so what can you improve?
the first and most important thing for any game is bandwidth, using a home hub with a shared bandwidth is ok for small games, but if more players and more data transit, collisions and packet lost begin to become an issue. to fix this an investment of between 20 to 50 euro is needed, buy a cheap used networking switch. this provides a 100mb link to all hosts, with no data loss.
after this the next best improvement is to have a dedicated server, this does not need to be fancy, any old desktop will do the job, install the server software and run, my personal choice was to invest in a server unit.
i picked up a 1u server with 2Gb ram and 2 pIII cpu's, this is an old unit but does the job for most modern games, in a 30 euro price tag, ya cant go wrong!
good cable management is helpful also, try fit 10 people into a small room without falling over patch leads, try run power and cat cables under rug's or around chairs, shit like this really helps!
